Maguma No Gotoku (2004) [Japan] [18 ] is directed by Kaoru Okunami and is based on the novel of the same name written by Fumi Yoshinaga. The film tells the story of Momoko, a young girl who was raised in an orphanage after her mother abandoned her for dead at birth. She manages to talk herself into becoming a student at Kirin academy despite having no qualifications or even an official ID, but she faces opposition from other students who want to keep their privileges intact. After enduring harsh treatment from her academy peers, Momoko meets up with Kei, an old man who has lost both his wife and daughter. The two become friends and quickly realize that they share a lot in common, which helps them overcome their darkest moments. "Maguma No Gotoku (2004)" was directed by Kaoru Okunami and produced by the Nikkatsu Corporation. It received a theatrical release in Japan on December 4, 2004 where it was distributed by Nikkatsu.
The film premiered at #32 in Japan on December 4, 2004 where it grossed $90,055 on 32 screens for a per-screen average of $2,271. It went on to gross $408,596 domestically and $80,204 overseas for a worldwide total of $488,800.

In November 2006, this film was released by Madman Entertainment in Australia and Oceania. The Australian version contained a new English subtitle track and was titled "Maguma no Gotoku" ("Maguma No Gotoku" being another name for the manga). It was released on both Region 4 and Region 2 versions. In February 2007 Madman Entertainment released a further two versions of "Maguma No Gotoku". The second version was subtitled "Maguma No Gotoku - Burst Out Edition" and was available only in Region 4 (Australia) and the third version titled "Maguma No Gotoku - Explode Edition" was available in Region 2 (Japan). Anime News Network gave the film an overall grade of 'B', calling it "an hour-long treat, striking a careful balance between drama and humor". The reviewer said that the art was better than most live action versions of anime, as were some of the music choices. On the other hand, criticised Kaoru Okunami's direction as being passionless. In conclusion the reviewer called it a "nice change from today's usual fare". The review aggregator website, Rotten Tomatoes listed the films critical rating at 80% with an average rating of 6.6 out of 10 based on 14 reviews.
